How Suboxone Works to Effect Treatment in Opioid Dependent Patients.

Suboxone is a relatively safe medication approved by FDA and DEA for the treatment of opiate addiction, pain killer addiction dependence and abuse. The medication is not recommended for patients under age 16, and for children.

Suboxone contains a combination of active ingredients called buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine is an opioid, similar to opioids such as morphine, codeine, and heroin but produce less euphoric effects. Because of this, this component of medication may be easier to be weaned off from.

Naloxone on the other hand, blocks the effects of opioids such as morphine, codeine, and heroin. If Suboxone is injected, naloxone component will block the effects of buprenorphine and lead to withdrawal in a person with an opioid addiction. However when Suboxone is administered under the tongue per recommendation of the manufactures at the direction of your doctor, naloxone will not affect the effects of buprenorphine. Suboxone can also cause drug dependence leading to withdrawal symptoms if dosing is stopped too quickly. It is possible to notice withdrawal symptoms at the start of treatment because the patient may be dependent on other drugs. It is therefore important for the patient to tell his/her doctor all the medications or opioids they are taking at inception or start of treatment. Suboxone is not a recreational drug and your doctor is the best qualified professional to assist you regulate the amount of medication you will be taking to avoid and or reduce the severity of any withdrawal symptoms. A note of caution is that patients on Suboxone should never stop taking their medication without consultation with their doctor.
